I look for the point where a body becomes recognizable without breaking away from the paint around it. I want that uncertainty to remain: looking at the body changes the surrounding space, and looking at the space changes the body.
저는 몸이 주변의 물감과 이어진 채로 알아볼 수 있는 형태가 되는 지점을 찾습니다. 윤곽은 잠시 또렷해졌다가 다시 사라지기도 합니다. 몸을 보다가 주변을 새롭게 보고, 주변을 보다가 몸을 다르게 느끼는 그 불확실함을 남겨 두고 싶습니다.

느껴질 만큼의 형태
In Emergence VIII, faces and hands come into focus while the pink pour keeps moving through them. A figure needs enough form to be felt, but I want the first movement of the paint to remain active within it.
Emergence VIII에서는 분홍빛 물감의 흐름이 이어지는 가운데 얼굴과 손이 모습을 드러냅니다. 인물이 느껴질 만큼의 형태는 필요하지만, 물감이 처음 만들어 낸 움직임 또한 그 안에 살아 있기를 바랍니다.

in the paint.
물감 속의 신체
In XIV, the movement of the pour crosses the curve of a back. In X, hands and folded forms gather around an opening. The body takes shape, but the paint keeps its own movement.
XIV에서는 부어진 물감의 흐름이 등의 곡선을 가로지릅니다. X에서는 손과 접힌 듯한 형태들이 열린 공간을 둘러쌉니다. 몸의 형태가 드러나도 물감은 고유한 움직임을 이어 갑니다.

Artist’s note
작가 노트
I grew up in the American South, the gay son of a pastor. The distance between what I thought I should feel and what I actually felt became something I could not ignore.
Understanding that distance did not make it disappear. Painting gives me a way to stay with it without deciding too quickly what it means. I return to bodies that are becoming visible, yet remain connected to the uncertain space around them.
These paintings developed before I had clear language for the inquiry behind them. I now call it Inner Ecology. My own experience is where the work begins, but I want it to remain open to someone whose life has been very different from mine.
저는 미국 남부에서 목사의 아들이자 게이로 자랐습니다. 마땅히 느껴야 한다고 생각했던 감정과 실제로 느끼는 감정 사이의 거리는 더 이상 외면할 수 없는 것이 되었습니다.
그 거리를 이해한다고 해서 사라지는 것은 아니었습니다. 회화는 그 의미를 서둘러 정하지 않고 그 간극을 마주할 수 있게 해 줍니다. 저는 형태를 드러내면서도 주변의 불확실한 공간과 여전히 이어져 있는 몸으로 거듭 돌아갑니다.
이 그림들은 작업의 바탕에 있는 질문들을 설명할 언어를 갖기 전에 시작되었습니다. 지금 저는 그 탐구를 ‘내면의 생태학’이라 부릅니다. 저의 경험에서 출발하지만, 저와 전혀 다른 삶을 살아온 사람에게도 열려 있는 작업이기를 바랍니다.

Before I draw a figure, I look for direction and weight. A turn, a reach or a fold can already be present in the movement of the pour.
인물을 그리기 전에 방향과 무게를 살핍니다. 몸을 틀거나 팔을 뻗거나 몸을 접는 움직임이 부어진 물감의 흐름 안에 이미 들어 있기도 합니다.

What I see and hear does not stay outside me. It becomes part of the way I speak to myself, and part of what I say to others. In these three paintings, I am thinking about that exchange. What I notice, what I say and what I am able to hear do not always agree. I want the figures to hold that tension without resolving it for the viewer.
제가 보고 듣는 것은 제 바깥에만 머물지 않습니다. 스스로에게 건네는 말에도, 다른 사람에게 하는 말에도 스며듭니다. 이 세 그림에서는 그 주고받음을 생각했습니다. 제가 알아차리는 것, 말하는 것, 받아들일 수 있는 이야기가 언제나 일치하지는 않습니다. 인물들이 그 긴장을 품되, 관람자를 위해 답을 정해 놓지는 않기를 바랐습니다.

Understanding myself
does not always change
how I respond.
나 자신을 이해한다고 해서
반응이 늘 달라지는 것은 아니다.
I can understand why I react in a certain way and still repeat it. Inner Ecology grew from that difficulty. I think about the relationship between what I feel, what I think and what I actually do, and how it changes around other people. Painting gives me time to notice those relationships before explaining them. A gesture can hold a conflict that I have not yet found words for. I am still learning how to respond.
왜 그렇게 반응하는지 이해하면서도 같은 반응을 되풀이할 때가 있습니다. ‘내면의 생태학’은 그 어려움에서 시작되었습니다. 저는 제가 느끼는 것, 생각하는 것, 실제로 하는 행동 사이의 관계와 타인과 함께할 때 그 관계가 어떻게 달라지는지를 생각합니다. 회화는 그 관계를 설명하기 전에 살펴볼 시간을 줍니다. 아직 말로 표현하지 못한 갈등이 하나의 몸짓에 담길 수도 있습니다. 저는 여전히 어떻게 응답할지 배우고 있습니다.

For Digital Media Art Festa 2026, organized by Hana Bank, Emergence moved from canvas to the LED façade of Hana Financial Group in Myeongdong, Seoul. Developed from Baker’s paintings, the moving-image work unfolds through the appearance and disappearance of figures. A relationship explored within a painted surface becomes a sequence encountered in the city.
하나은행이 주최한 디지털미디어아트페스타 2026에서 Emergence는 캔버스를 떠나 서울 명동 하나금융그룹 건물의 LED 파사드에 펼쳐졌습니다. 베이커의 회화를 바탕으로 제작된 영상은 인물이 나타나고 사라지는 과정을 따라 전개됩니다. 회화의 표면에서 탐구하던 관계가 도시에서 경험하는 시간의 흐름으로 이어집니다.

다니엘 베이커
Daniel Baker is an American painter based in Seoul, working from Park and Baker Studio. He received a BA in Studio Art and Philosophy from Berry College, Georgia, in 2005. He has taught at Korea Aerospace University and worked in content design and copywriting at KBS. His work has been exhibited in South Korea and the United States. In 2026 he was an invited artist at Digital Media Art Festa, presenting a moving-image work developed from his paintings.
다니엘 베이커는 서울을 기반으로 Park and Baker Studio에서 활동하는 미국 출신 화가입니다. 2005년 미국 조지아주 베리 칼리지에서 스튜디오 아트와 철학을 전공하여 학사 학위를 받았습니다. 한국항공대학교에서 강의했으며 KBS에서 콘텐츠 디자인과 카피라이팅 업무를 맡았습니다. 한국과 미국에서 작품을 선보였고, 2026년 디지털미디어아트페스타에 초청되어 자신의 회화를 바탕으로 제작한 영상 작품을 발표했습니다.
